Pei-Hsun Wang Numerical analysis of nano-tapered waveguides for cavity coupling optimization

We numerically model the waveguide-to-cavity coupling with a nano-taper. By optimizing the tapered width, high efficient coupling can be achieved with an enhancement up to 100% without further minimizing the coupling gap and elongating the coupling length. This nano-taper design provides the flexibility in coupling for the potential applications in nonlinear and quantum photonics, especially requiring over-coupling.

Chun Wei Chi Broadband Silicon Nitride Polarization Splitter Rotator

In this study, a polarization splitter rotator (PSR) element was designed using Si3N4 material. When the input light is TE0, the light penetrates directly to the output. When the input becomes TM0, the TM0 mode is converted to TE1 mode by taper because of the strong TM0-TE1 hybridization and then TE1 is converted TE0 mode by an asymmetric directional coupler. Therefore, such an element can convert unpolarized light into 100% TE wave with good transmission efficiency in the C-band.

Sin-Yun Lu A silicon photonics approach for miniaturized fiber optics gyroscope

We demonstrate a tactical grade interferometric fiber optics gyroscope based on silicon photonics platform. As-realized silicon chip integrates all passive and active components on the same chip while leaving the light source and fiber coil externally. The proposed Si IFOG is a promising alternative to LiNbO3 and MEMS counterparts with a miniaturized footprint and better cost/performance value.

Ying-Tzu Chen Opto-Electrical NOR Gate Using Light Emitting Transistors Without Resistors

We develop an optoelectrical NOR gate without resistors, using Light-Emitting Transistors (LET) on GaAs substrate by the monolithically integrated fabrication. By dual-input and dual-output (electrical and optical) characteristics, it can be applied to Opto-Electrical Integrated Circuits (OEICs).

Wei Hong Phase Error Correction in Digital Resampling of LiDAR Application

A digital auxiliary interferometer is proposed to correct the laser non-linear frequency sweep phenomenon by resampling the signal through a Hilbert-Transform phase-detection method. The resampling capability from a digital Hilbert-Transform auxiliary interferometers demonstrate its superiority to conventional analog Zero-crossing on two different optical-path-delay lengths.
