Professor Yan-Kuin Su is currently a Chair Professor in Kun Shan University (KSU), Tainan Taiwan. He is now a Director of Green Energy Technology Research Center, supported by Ministry of Education Taiwan. He ever served as President of KSU from 2007 to 2018. He also ever worked as Chairman of Department of Electrical Engineering NCKU from 1989 to 1993. From 1995 to 1998 and 2001 to 2007 he served as Dean of Research and Development and Dean of Academic Affairs, NCKU respectively.

His research interests are in the semiconductor and optoelectronic devices. So far he has published 752 SCI journal papers and got over 80 patents in Taiwan and United States. He ever got four times of Excellent Research Award from National Science Council (Former of Ministry of Science and Technology). He is an IEEE Life Fellow since 2018 and IEEE Fellow in 2007 for great contributions to optoelectronics and nanophotonics research and education. He is also a SPIE Fellow since 2012 and an OSA Fellow since 2013.

In 1993 he was a visiting Professor in Stuttgart University, Germany, in 1986 a member of technical staff (MTS) in AT&T Bell Laboratories, US. And an Adjunct Professor of State University of New York, Binghamton. US in 1991~1997. He has got many prizes and medals during his research career including excellent professor of Chinese Engineering Society and Chinese Electrical Engineering Society.

In this talk, the background of micro LEDs and mini LEDs display, will be introduced. As the size of LEDs decreasing, applications transition from illumination to display. Many applications now and future of micro LEDs and mini LED display will be presented, such as ultra high contrast, ultra high brightness, oversize, flexible and ultra high resolution of display.

Various display technology of LCD, organic LED, Ⅲ-nitride micro LED, digital light processing and laser beam steering will be compared.

There is a great challenge of micro LEDs display, for example, epitaxy and chip process, AM pixel driving circuit, color purity and gamut, mass transfer and inspection and repair techniques. These challenges will be discussed and solved.

Finally, some successful demonstration of micro LEDs in domestic and foreign companies of micro LEDs potential and future market development will also be proposed.

Hon Ki TSANG studied Engineering at the University of Cambridge, obtaining the BA (Honours) degree in 1987 and PhD in 1991. He was a visiting-researcher at Bell Communications Research, Redbank NJ, USA in 1990 and a UK Science and Engineering Research Council Postdoctoral Fellow at University of Bath 1991-93. He joined the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) as a lecturer in September 1993 and he was substantiated and promoted to Associate Professor in 1996. From December 2001 to summer 2003, he worked as R&D Director at Bookham Technology plc, UK where he managed the development and Telcordia qualification of some of the first silicon photonic products to be deployed in metro optical network systems. He returned to CUHK in 2003 as a full Professor. Hon Tsang served as Chairman of the Department of Electronic Engineering in 2010-2016. He was a visiting Fellow at Clare Hall, University of Cambridge in 2017 and was later named as an Honorary Chair Professor by National Chiao Tung University (Taiwan). At CUHK he is concurrently Director of the Institute of Optical Sciences and Technology, Director of the Center of Advanced Research in Photonics, and Associate Dean (Research) of the Faculty of Engineering. His most cited works include his papers on nonlinear silicon photonics, advanced waveguide grating couplers, and hybrid integration of 2D materials on silicon waveguides. He was elected to Fellow of OSA (now renamed as Optica) in 2018 and Fellow of IEEE in 2019. He chaired the IEEE Photonics Society (Hong Kong Chapter) in 2004-5 and has served as Associate Editor (2005-12) and Editor-in-Chief (2012-14) of IEEE Photonics Society Newsletter and Associate Editor of Photonics Research (2015-17). He is, since 2017, the Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Journal of Quantum Electronics.

We give a general introduction to silicon photonics, highlighting some of its key features and advantages that will enable future advances in communications, optoelectronic sensors, and quantum computing. We present our recent research results on silicon photonics for communications, sensing and optoelectronic signal processing. We give examples of silicon photonics for high-capacity communications and describe advances on the design of advanced waveguide grating couplers for mode-division-multiplexing in multimode optical fibers. We will also briefly describe other recent results including reconfigurable coherent microring resonator networks, hybrid integration of 2D materials on silicon and integrated silicon quantum photonic devices.

Topological Photonics is currently one of the most active research areas in optics, and also one of the spearheads of research in topological physics at large. We are now more than a decade after it started. Topological Photonics has already proved itself as an excellent platform for experimenting with concepts imported from condensed matter physics. More importantly, Topological Photonics has also triggered new fundamental ideas of its own and has offered exciting applications that could become real technologies in the near future. Perhaps the most important example is the Topological Insulator Laser. This talk will provide an overview of the field, present some of the milestones, and discuss future challenges.

Stephen Boppart is a Professor and Grainger Distinguished Chair in Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) with appointments in the Departments of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Bioengineering, and the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology. His Biophotonics Imaging Laboratory is focused on developing novel optical biomedical diagnostic and imaging technologies and translating these into clinical applications. Prof. Boppart received his Ph.D. in Medical and Electrical Engineering from MIT, his M.D. from Harvard Medical School, and specialty training in Internal Medicine. He has published over 450 invited and contributed publications, delivered over 1000 invited and contributed presentations, and has over 50 patents related to optical biomedical imaging technology. He has mentored over 200 interdisciplinary undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate researchers. He was recognized by MIT Technology Review magazine as one of the Top 100 Young Innovators for his development of medical technology, and with the Paul F. Forman Engineering Excellence Award from the Optical Society of America for dedication and advancement in undergraduate research education. More recently he received the international Hans Sigrist Prize in the field of Diagnostic Laser Medicine, the IEEE Technical Achievement Award, and the SPIE Biophotonics Technology Innovator Award. Prof. Boppart has co-founded four start-up companies to commercialize and disseminate his optical technologies for biomedical imaging and was recently elected a member of the National Academy of Inventors. He is a Fellow of AAAS, IEEE, OSA, SPIE, AIMBE, BMES, and IAMBE. He established and served as Director of Imaging at Illinois, a university-wide program to integrate imaging science, technology, and applications across multiple modalities and fields, and is currently Director of the Center for Optical Molecular Imaging, supported by an academic-clinical-industry partnership with GlaxoSmithKline. Prof. Boppart has been a strong advocate for the integration of engineering, technology, and medicine to advance human health and our healthcare systems. He played an active role in the visioning, development, and launch of the new engineering-based Carle Illinois College of Medicine at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and is currently serving as the Executive Associate Dean and Chief Diversity Officer.

A versatile all-optical technique is introduced for neurophysiology that utilizes a novel label-free optical microscopy system called Superfast Polarization-sensitive Off-axis Full-field Optical Coherence Microscopy (SPoOF OCM). SPoOF OCM captures the changes to both the optical path length and birefringence induced by the millisecond-scale electrical activity of neurons. With an ability to capture responses spanning three orders-of-magnitude in both space and time, SPoOF OCM overcomes existing limitations of traditional electrophysiology and fluorescence microscopy.
